Sunday, May 31st: Sumi-e (Japanese Ink Painting)
Sumi-e, meaning black ink painting, is commonly described as art done in monochrome. Introduced to Japan by Zen Buddhist monks from China in the fourteenth century, brush strokes became reduced in number and simplified to create the sumi-e style known today. In this art form, black ink, specialized brushes, and rice paper (washi) are used to develop minimalist, impressionistic images that capture nature.
